There are a lot of small businesses out there but unfortunately only 3% of them make it to 5 years, with too many staying in “hobby” phase or giving up altogether before they have the opportunity to see their business thrive.
I’ve been building businesses for 10 years now and what I’ve come to realise is that those who aren’t successful are not willing to commit to taking consistent action. They don’t master the art of running a business, they don’t invest in their ongoing education and training, and they haven’t found a mentor or a network to get advice from. In short, they avoid the important things that are required to move a small business forward.
So why listen to me?
Good question. Who is Faye and what makes her an expert?
Both of my parents were successful business owners and I had always wanted to be my own boss but had no idea what type of business I wanted to run or what I wanted to do. So I started out in the corporate world first and built a strong career within financial and professional services.
I lived the corporate high-life in London, but despite the money and status, I soon became very unsatisfied and decided to follow in my family's entrepreneurial footsteps. To cut a long story short, I left the UK, requalified to be a Professional Coach, and in 2007 launched my first business - Outshine Consulting - which specialises in career coaching.
I'm very passionate about career change, and truly believe that everyone should have a career they love, so I found myself coaching lots of people on how to change career and in turn many of those went on to set up their own businesses - and would ask me for their help.
Before long I was helping start-up's start, established businesses grow, and successful businesses scale. And I loved it.
Fastforward to now, and I've helped hundreds of business owners just like you get rid of the fog and clear the confusion on how to build and grow a successful business.
My own biz-building journey hasn't always been smooth sailing, and in fact I've experienced many highly challenging times along the way, but from that rollercoaster of experiences I've learned the recipe to sustained business success and with over a decade of experience under my belt it was a natural progression to launch Busy Business Women in 2016 to help like-minded entrepreneurial women realise their ambition of building and growing a booming business.

5 REASONS SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS FAIL

Mistake 1 Trying to do it all
So many small business owners try to wear every hat in their business. They become everything from the CEO to the toilet cleaner and end up trying to do it all. Which is, of course, a recipe for disaster.
You don’t have to do everything in your business yourself, but so often we do. Perhaps you think you can’t afford help. Maybe you don’t know who to get to help you. Or perhaps you think you can do it better than anyone else.
Either way, when you’re doing ‘stuff’ that someone else could be doing for you, you’re taking yourself away from the tasks that only you as a business owner can do which will build and grow your business, not to mention holding you back from doing the things that you love doing and the reason you got into business in the first place!
Mistake 2 Lack of consistency
Successful small business owners take action consistently. They know what to focus on - and when - in order to build their business, and are selective with where they spend their time in order to reach their goals, increase their revenue, and live the life they really want.
Mistake 3 Lack of education
Many business owners don’t believe they have the budget for their own learning and development and as such don’t invest in up-skilling on critical areas such as how to grow their business, sales and marketing strategies, and keeping up to date on the latest trends and tactics to be successful.
The fact is, you can’t afford NOT to keep learning, and the money you invest now will come back multiplied later on. It’s critical you think of your education as an investment and not an expense.
Mistake 4 Wasting time
Way too many business owners think they’re being productive in their business, but when you take a close look at the work they’re spending their precious - and often very limited - time on, it’s nothing other than fillers tasks that make them feel busy without any real commercial outcome.
Time is your most valuable asset so it’s critical you know how to spend it well in order to build a business that’s successful and doesn’t require you to work 24/7 to reach your goals.
Mistake 5 Being a lone ranger
Going it alone in business is the slow road to success (or failure). Sure, you might get to where you want to be eventually, but why waste time when you can get a mentor that’s been in your shoes before and can short cut the years of frustration and pain they’ve been through to help you be successful faster?

Read Books
Who has the time to read all of the books out there, sift through what is and isn’t relevant to your business, fathom out how to do it on your own, and then get stumped because you don’t have someone to ask for help when you get stuck? I won’t pretend that books aren’t a valuable resource, and I’ll definitely recommend must-reads to you, but only occasionally. Reading is not enough to build a successful business.

You could spend a lot of time going from one event to another, trying to piece together oodles of information, and get confused about how to implement what you’ve heard or whether it’s relevant to your business.
